Objective

Using photography and type hierarchy to communicate a
style of music and album title using an album of our choosing.
The photography works in harmony with the title and artist’s
name to establish the feeling of the record in a captivating way.

Artwork for “Retired from Sad, New Career in Business,”
the 2013 album by Mitski.

Photo Exploration

I focused on translating the emotions of uncertainty, yearning, and melancholy nostalgia of the lyrics into visually interesting compositions.

To convey themes of immaturity and grief for society’s obsession with productivity and profit, I experimented with cool tones and long exposure techniques. I used dramatic facial expressions and poses to underscore the sarcastic irony embedded in the title,

“Retired from Sad, New Career in Business.”

Experimenting with aerial studio self portraits using a tripod, the concept was taken in a different direction to highlight the feeling of being a small fish in the big pond of our all-consuming capitalistic world.

LP Packaging Design

I focused on combining two compositions to create a visual that characterizes the rollarcoaster of emotions felt in the album. The goal was to personify feeling lost and overwhelmed on a journey of self discovery, growing up, and heartbreak. Simple type in a dark blue elevates the type from an otherwise black and white palette.
